{"id":23597,"date":"2021-05-10T09:12:19","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T09:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/?p=23597"},"modified":"2021-05-10T09:12:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T09:12:21","slug":"stolen-art-more-than-half-a-million-works-recovered-in-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artrights.me\/en\/stolen-art-more-than-half-a-million-works-recovered-in-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Stolen art: more than half a million works recovered in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stolen-art-more-than-half-a-million-works-recovered-in-2020\"><strong>Stolen art: more than half a million works recovered in 2020<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trafficking in stolen art continues even in pandemic: over half a million works were recovered in 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art dealers were unfazed by the pandemic, taking advantage of the lockdown that shut down museums, galleries and cultural centers to carry out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/en\/the-5-most-incredible-art-thefts-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>theft and forgery<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the dossier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reportdifesa.it\/tag\/attivita-operativa-2020-dei-carabinieri-del-tpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>&#8220;Operational Activity 2020&#8221; <\/strong><\/a><strong>of the<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reportdifesa.it\/tag\/attivita-operativa-2020-dei-carabinieri-del-tpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong> <\/strong><\/a>specialized unit of the Weaponry, <strong>501,574 <\/strong>are the art assets that the <strong>Command of the Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Heritage <\/strong>recovered in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among these goods, the &#8220;thieves of beauty&#8221; raided <strong>antiques, archives and books (483,978)<\/strong>; followed by <strong>archaeological, paleontological and numismatic finds <\/strong>from clandestine excavations <strong>(17,596)<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, <strong>1,547 art forgeries <\/strong>were found which, had they been placed on the market and sold, would have resulted in an illicit turnover of over <strong>415 million euros.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the interventions and searches of the Blue Helmets of Culture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/en\/why-is-it-difficult-to-resell-a-stolen-work-of-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>thefts <\/strong><\/a><strong>decreased by 17.6% (287 compared to 345 in 2019)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some figures: <strong>libraries <\/strong>registered a <strong>50% <\/strong>decrease, from 12 to 6; <strong>places of worship<\/strong>, such as churches and monasteries, reduced by <strong>17%<\/strong>, from 135 to 112 stolen works; <strong>-21.4% <\/strong>instead for <strong>museums <\/strong>that from 14 stolen works in 2019 arrive at 11. On the other hand, the figure for <strong>archives <\/strong>remains <strong>unchanged<\/strong>: 8 exactly as in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2020 was also the year of much-needed rediscoveries and finds: here are a few examples!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The splendid <strong>Head of a Roman female divinity<\/strong>, dating back to the first century AD and stolen in 1977 from the Roman Forum, has been identified following international investigations.<\/li><li>The work <strong>&#8220;Ritratto di Signora&#8221; (Portrait of a Lady) by Gustave Klimt <\/strong>was accidentally found a few months ago in a cavity of the <strong>Ricci Oddi Gallery <\/strong>in Piacenza, after having been lost for over twenty years.<\/li><li>An ancient painting by <strong>Cimabue <\/strong>found in the Parisian countryside which, after being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/en\/how-to-create-the-certificate-of-authenticity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">certified as authentic<\/a>, was sold for 24 million euros.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2020s, with cultural venues closed and markets at a standstill, illicit trafficking shifted primarily <strong>abroad<\/strong>, requiring cooperation between <strong>foreign police forces, Europol and Interpol <\/strong>to successfully find and repatriate many stolen works of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the counterfeited works, alongside fakes by <strong>Balla, Schifano, Warhol and De Chirico<\/strong>, we also find <strong>van Gogh <\/strong>and the seizure of 134 apocryphal works by <strong>Silvano Campeggi<\/strong>, author of the most important posters in the history of cinema, such as &#8220;Gone with the Wind&#8221; and &#8220;Ben Hur&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the use of <strong>increasingly sophisticated technologies <\/strong>to support the <strong>research and protection of works of art<\/strong>, the risk of the circulation of reproductions and forgeries illegally placed on the market is destined to decrease considerably in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;The advent of new technologies, which we are working on, will allow us to achieve better and better results,&#8221; <\/em>promises General <strong>Roberto Riccardi, commander of the Tpc.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among these, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/en\"><strong>Art Rights <\/strong><\/a>platform for the management and certification of works of art that, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/en\/blockchain-for-artists\/\"><strong>blockchain <\/strong><\/a>technology, allows to create a real <strong>Passport of the Work of Art <\/strong>to protect the authenticity of the work for Artists, Collectors and Operators in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo Credits: <em>La Domenica del Corriere magazine, published September 1911.
