{"id":4831,"date":"2018-09-24T13:05:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T13:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/migrate1.artrights.me\/galleria-d-arte\/"},"modified":"2021-04-21T14:29:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T14:29:30","slug":"art-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artrights.me\/en\/art-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an art gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #dd9900;\"><strong>WHAT IS AN ART GALLERY<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Discover its purpose<\/strong><\/h1>\n<section class=\"content-section full-width with-col cover pb-70 pb-xs-50 rella-no-margin content-section-5a71cb13dc9ff\">\n<div class=\"row vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column col-md-12\">\n<h1 class=\"section-text text-block \">The art gallery is a reference point for artists, collectors and for the different players of the art world.<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->According to the <strong>The Art Market 2018 report<\/strong> curated by <strong>Clare McAndrew for Art Basel and UBS,<\/strong> <strong>there are 296,540 galleries at global level<\/strong> that can be divided by taking into account the type of commercialised art:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Contemporary Art<\/strong> (artists born after 1960)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post-war Art<\/strong> (artists born after 1910)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modern Art<\/strong> (artists born between 1875 and 1910)<\/li>\n<li><strong>19th-Century Art<\/strong> (artists born between 1821 and 1874)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old Masters<\/strong> (artists born before 1821)[signinlocker id = 4040] Art galleries, <strong>chosen by 66% of international collectors as the preferred purchasing channel<\/strong>, are active between the primary and secondary markets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The primary market<\/strong> concerns the first sale of the work of an artist &#8211; usually living &#8211; and the first buyer; <strong>the secondary market<\/strong> is linked to works already present on the market they have been already sold at least once in a<strong> gallery or auction house<\/strong>,\u00a0 and its artistic value is given for acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Among the <strong>main tasks<\/strong> of an art gallery, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/artrights.me\/en\/role-of-art-gallerist-today\/\">gallerist<\/a> and his staff work, we can identify:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Selection of artists, according to their own <strong>mission<\/strong>, following criteria such as<strong> geographical<\/strong> (local \/ national \/ international), <strong>economic<\/strong> (low price range, medium, high or very high), <strong>medium<\/strong> (painting, sculpture, photography, video art, new media etc etc &#8230;) or even <strong>artistic research<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Support, enhancement and positioning on the market for their artists, through exhibitions, events and <a href=\"https:\/\/artrights.me\/en\/fairs-art-world\/\">art fairs<\/a>, in order to promote them to collectors, public or private institutions and curators<\/li>\n<li>Support for their <strong>collectors<\/strong> and help for those who are ready to start their art collection, thanks to<strong> the precise and timely knowledge<\/strong> of the national and international artistic scene, within which the artists to be supported are selected<\/li>\n<li>Guarantee of <strong>quality and provenance<\/strong> of the artworks presented within their own space, delivering, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/artrights.me\/en\/fairs-art-world\/\">purchase<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/artrights.me\/en\/certificate-of-authenticity\/\"><strong>certificate of authenticity<\/strong><\/a> as required by law from Article 64 of the &#8220;Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape&#8221; at Italian level ( Legislative Decree 42 of 22 January 2004)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starting from a first classification provided by <strong>Donald Thompson<\/strong> in the book &#8220;<em>The $ 12 million shark<\/em>&#8220;, <strong>the art galleries are divided into four main types:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Brand Galleries:<\/strong>\u00a0they take care of the most popular artists of the moment, the so-called <strong>blue chips<\/strong>. They benefit from contacts with the best collectors, museum institutions and their directors, and the most influential curators. They take part in the best art fairs in the world and are able to support the market of their artists in multiple places, having several locations in several countries. As an example we can mention <strong>Gagosian, White Cube or Hauser &amp; Wirth<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Traditional galleries:<\/strong> they operate by selecting artists who are establishing themselves along with other <strong>mid-career artists<\/strong>, promoting them to the various players in the art world. They have <strong>stable links with their collectors<\/strong> and geographic positioning near brand galleries; they also participate in a selected list of <strong>art fairs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Commercial galleries:<\/strong> they are <strong>incubators of rising or established artists<\/strong> who will afterwords become part of a &#8220;traditional gallery&#8221;.
